Offers and Promotions - Why they're effective!

In 2021, it’s estimated that we are exposed to 6,000 to 10,000 ads every single day. Although knowing that can make you question if there’s even a point of promoting offers anymore, there definitely is. According to a study by Valassis in 2019, 86% of respondents are influenced by coupons to both choose among the brands they typically buy and try new products.  

So, what does this mean?   

It means that if you aren’t offering offers in the form of coupons or discounts, your competitors most likely are.  

As customers are constantly looking for good value, it’s important to consider discounts as part of your offering where you can. Below are a couple of tips for you to do this!  

Utilise seasonal offers:  

Seasonal offers are offers over a particular period of the year. A great example of seasonal offers is discounts over the festive period. In retail, the Christmas period is when the bulk of sales are made across a financial year.  

Alternatively, you can offer seasonal offers based on the weather seasons. In some industries, the peak period depends on the season. For instance, Air Conditioner technicians’ work peaks during summer when people need air conditioners to function.  

Customer Loyalty: 

Offering discounts and offers can help you become the ‘go-to’ option for a customer. It builds goodwill and if the customer feels like they’re getting a great deal, you’ll be the business they call when they need another job that you can help with.  

You could even consider designing a set of offers specifically for returning customers to build your database.     

Don’t sell yourself short:  

Offering value to a customer is always ideal. It is important, however, to keep your standards high. Keep your offers and discounts fair to the customer and you. At the end of the day, you don’t want to be struggling to upkeep your overheads if you’ve priced too low.  

Sit with your business consultant (see our Partners page if you need a business consultant) or your accountant, figure out where you’re at financially and where you can make room for some discounts to increase your sales. There are several ways to do this, but one of the most common is to work out your hourly rate inclusive of labour, tools, supplies, and travel to name a few, and go from there.
